Effective granite countertop care has become essential, with granite countertops making a huge comeback among homeowners. What's great about granite? As with any other type of countertop, this material has its pros and cons.

Granite has numerous benefits. It's attractive and almost seems to glisten. It's also sanitary, since its sturdiness can effectively keep bacteria at bay. Granite is also heat-resistant, allowing you to place extremely hot items on the countertop's surface. Finally, granite holds its value.

Granite also has some notable drawbacks. Its durability means that you're stuck with the color until you replace the countertop. Also, granite is difficult to remove from cabinets once you've attached it onto them. Finally, the cost of granite is somewhat steep. In fact, the installation can require so many person hours that it can easily cost two or three times the cost of the granite countertop itself!

If you decide to add granite countertops to your kitchen, then you'll need to be aware of proper granite countertop care. While granite is as strong as an ox, it has some flaws that can impact its care. If you apply a preexisting stain, then you can stain it permanently. Also, striking granite with a hard, sharp object can cause it to crack.

Here are some tips to care properly for your granite countertops:

  1. Apply a sealer - As a rule of thumb, you should always apply a sealer to an all-natural stone, such as granite. However, applying the sealer is more involved than it may seem. While you might read in different sources that the sealer's role is to prevent stains, that's not quite accurate. In fact, the function of the sealer is the retard the rate at which the granite absorbs liquids. So while a sealer doesn't create protection that's 100% effective, it buys you some time to clean up the liquid on the countertop--before it starts to seep below the countertop's surface. While new sealers work more effectively than older ones, any liquid could eventually seep deep enough into the granite, to cause a stain.

  2. Use a soft cloth or sponge to clean the surface. The key to cleaning the surface is to do it effectively, while safeguarding the sealer. Along with these materials, you could also use a formulated stone cleaner, or dish soap. In most situations, hot water is enough to quickly clean up the granite countertop.

  3. Use coasters and cutting boards. This is a crucial rule for effective granite countertop care. Never place cans, bottles, or glasses directly onto the countertop's surface. Likewise, never cut directly on the countertop. This will help to prevent your countertop from being stained and being cut-respectively.

  4. Place hot pads and trivets underneath very hot items. These items include pots and pans. While the granite could technically withstand the heat of a hot pot, avoid conducting a science experiment.

After installing a granite countertop in your kitchen, use these tips to ensure that you properly care for the granite. While granite is strong, the right care will also make it last long.
