A Laminate Countertop Has A Few Important
Advantages

Consider installing a
laminate countertop for your kitchen, if you value form over function. Most of
us are familiar with laminated flooring. Well, laminated countertops are along
those lines. What exactly is involved with laminates?
This involves multiple layers of paper that the
manufacturer has treated with resin. Then a process of intense heat and pressure
sandwiches these layers together. Underneath this layer of resin and paper is a
base. The base is comprised of composite (compound) wood.
Advantages
Cost - Whether you're on a
shoestring budget or simply want to save some money, when choosing a
countertop for your kitchen, a laminate countertop is definitely one of the
most affordable options. The initial cost is significantly lower than other
types of countertops, including tile, ceramic, marble, and granite. You can
then use the money you save for other components in your kitchen.
Installation - As with laminate
flooring, laminate countertops are really easy to install. If you're looking
for DIY projects in your kitchen, then this could easily be one of them. By
installing the countertop yourself, you'll further increase your savings.
How does that sound?
Finishes - You can find
laminate countertops in a cornucopia of various finishes. Instead of
spending a ton of money on more expensive countertop materials (such as
marble or ceramic tile), choose a laminated countertop with a finish that
resembles those materials. This gives you the look of pricier countertops,
without the higher price tags.
Flexibility - This is
definitely one of the biggest benefits of laminated countertops. For
instance, you can easily maneuver the laminate around rounds and corners,
while this task would be much more challenging if you were working with
granite or tile.
Another benefit is that you can install laminate
atop a section of countertop that's attached to a base cabinet's back. Due to
laminate's low cost, this further makes it more affordable than other countertop
types. So you'll be saving money in more than one way.
Drawbacks
Not heat-resistant Unlike other sturdier types
of countertops, laminated countertops aren't heat-resistant. In fact,
placing an extremely hot object on the laminate can cause it to crack. To
solve this problem, place placemats or trivets on the countertops, before
placing hot items on them.
Inability to be repaired Once the laminate
becomes damaged, not only is the damage done, but it can't be undone. You
can use special kits to make the damage less noticeable. But once a piece of
the countertop becomes cracked or broken, you can't totally repair the
damage.
Vulnerable to cuts, cracks, and chips Laminated
countertops are vulnerable to scratches, cuts, chips, and cracks. This is
especially true along the edges of the countertops. In particular, it's
highly advisable that you avoid using sharp objects along the countertop's
surface.
If you want a basic and affordable kitchen
countertop, then laminated countertops might be your best bet. However, these
countertops have some somewhat major drawbacks. So weigh the countertops' pros
and cons before making laminate your countertop of choice!
