Low Acid Coffee

Use this search feature to quickly find the information you're looking for.

Are you looking for coffee that's full of taste, but less acrid than normal? If so, then you should consider low acid coffee. The chemical properties of such coffee makes it significantly less acidic during the roasting or brewing process. In fact, it's possible for such coffee to be one-fourth to two-thirds less acidic than "standard" coffee, without compromising the taste or aroma of the coffee. Several coffee retailers sell this type of coffee, in several different flavors.

People who suffer from acid reflux or various digestive problems, can best benefit from low acid coffee. Coffee is actually among various foods that often cause acid reflux or digestive problems. Other such foods include chocolate, spicy foods, fatty foods, and mint. While eating foods that will neutralize the acid is also effective, directly reducing the acidity of the coffee is the most practical method to use.

One of the most common ways of producing low acid coffee is by using special methods when roasting the coffee beans. Such methods can reduce the acidity of the coffee by up to 25%, without negatively affecting the taste or aroma of the beverage. The most prolific produces of low-acid coffee both use all-natural methods to reduce the coffee's acidity. One method reduces the acidity of natural green coffee beans, while the other method involves reducing the acidity during the extraction process. Clinical studies have shown that these methods significantly reduce the amount of acidity in coffee, and provided relief for those who suffered from digestive problems resulting from coffee with high acidic levels.

The other technique for creating coffee that's less acidic, involves a basic yet lengthy process of cold brewing. This process can use coffee beans that have already been ground. How effective is it? Some producers of such coffee claim that this cold brewing process reduces the acidic levels of coffee by up to two-thirds their original value! Here's how it works. Grounds are placed in cold water, where they sit for 12 hours. When liquid is extracted in a process called "decanting," the concentrate can be produced by blending the liquid with ice, or adding hot water. This process is so popular that cold-brewing

machines for coffee are now available on the market.

If you like a hands-on approach to making coffee, then you should consider brewing your own low-acid coffee. Here are the steps:

1. Add coffee grounds to your coffee filter.

Use a 2:1 ratio of coffee-water for heated coffee, and add no water for iced coffee.

2. Add water.

This is a matter of personal preference, and is based on how strong or weak you want your coffee to be.

3. Place the filter into a pitcher.

Verify that the coffee grounds are submerged in water

4. Put everything in your refrigerator for 12-24 hours.

Stir it one time.

5. Strain out all the coffee grounds.

Add ice, milk, and sugar, to taste.

If you have acid reflux or digestion problems, then you can still enjoy drinking a cup of low-acid coffee. Such coffee is big on taste and low on the pH scale.
