Why are solid surface countertops better?

I enjoyed this article, and found it to be very informative and helpful. I wish the author had spent some time discussing which options are available to people who elect to use solid surface countertops for their kitchens, versus just selling the concept. Also, the fact remains that wood, marble and granite are infinitely sexier (in my opinion, anyway) than a plastic countertop. If you properly seal these materials, and can discipline yourself to do your chopping on a chopping board (where it should probably happen most of the time anyway), I don’t see why wood, marble and granite would not be adequate to adorn a counter.
